For many, the start of a new year brings goal setting, and resolving to make changes in our lives. For some, these resolutions include choosing a healthier diet. For people with braces, dietary restrictions on things like raw veggies and plain popcorn may cause a minor problem to such goals. However, there are still a lot of healthy foods you can eat! Here are a few suggestions:

Most fruits: Soft fruits–such as berries, cooked or canned pears, and peaches–are a great way to get vitamins and other nutrients into your diet. The fiber and water content of the fruit helps balance the sugars present, making it an excellent option for fitting something sweet into your diet. Avoid whole apples or raw pears, as biting into them can break brackets and wires.

Steamed or Sauteed veggies: Vegetables are delicious, and steaming them is a great way to make sure they are soft enough not to damage brackets or wires. Steaming is preferable to boiling, as many vegetables contain water-soluble vitamins that could leach out during the boiling process.

Low-Sugar Dairy: Many dairy products (milk, yogurt, even some cheeses) come in high-sugar varieties. However, buying plain or low-sugar versions of these treats give you all the benefits of calcium and protein that dairy brings, without the added sugar.
