Braces used to be thought of as something that was reserved only to improve alignment issues with a teenager’s teeth. While braces are most commonly fit during early to mid-adolescence, it’s not unheard of for younger people and even adults to need braces. There are a wide variety of reasons why people visit Patritto Orthodontics to be fitted for a set of braces.

As your child’s 20 baby teeth become loose and fall out to make room for their 32 adult teeth, it’s not uncommon for there to be alignment or overcrowding issue in some part of their mouth. This is often more likely if when your child was young they suffered a fractured or severely decayed baby tooth that required early extraction. In other cases, latent issues like thumb sucking or overuse of a pacifier in early childhood can lead to alignment issues. Sometimes braces are needed to correct overbite or under-bite issues.

In adults the natural processes of aging can sometimes cause your teeth to come mildly out of alignment. This is even more likely if you’ve had one or more teeth that were lost or extracted due to accident, fracture or severe tooth decay. The loss of structure caused by a missing tooth often draws the other teeth to turn or migrate to fill the gap. If these issues aren’t addressed, it can lead to alignment and bite problems or even increase the chances of chips and fractures happening on the neighboring teeth.

If you have noticed alignment, crowding or under or over bite issues in you or your child’s mouth, please feel free to call Patritto Orthodontics at 641-682-8143 to schedule an appointment. We look forward to helping your child have a healthy mouth and an appealing smile.
