Gum disease is a dental problem that should be avoided as much as possible, especially if you have braces. This disease forms when the plaque on your smile is left untreated. As it grows and takes over your oral cavity, it irritates the gums, destroys the underlying bone, and loosens the teeth. If it is still left untreated, your teeth will eventually fall out of your mouth. So, to avoid the development of this awful disease, please do the following things:

Brush your teeth
Make sure you brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day. Brushing helps remove the plaque from the surfaces of your teeth and it also kills the harmful bacteria and germs that can also create tooth decay. When you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Do your best to brush thoroughly along the gum line but be gentle as you do so.

Floss your smile
Flossing is vital if you want to prevent gum disease. Flossing cleans the crevices of your smile and removes the plaque and food particles that reside there. Make sure you floss at least once a day and you are gentle as you floss near the gums. If you need help flossing with braces, we will be happy to give you some tips.

Rinse your mouth
Mouthwash is a tool that many forget about, but we ask that you don’t. It’s best that you rinse your mouth with fluoride or anti-bacterial mouthwash at least once a day. Doing so will further prevent gum disease and it will also nourish and strengthen your teeth.

Visit your dentist
Visiting your dentist for a dental cleaning is the best thing you can do to prevent gum disease. During this appointment, the team will scrape the plaque off your smile and will provide special treatment if needed.

If you do these four things, you will be able to avoid the development of gum disease. We care for you and your smile, and we want you to have the best oral health possible.
